Low-friction synthetic brake block–UIC Standard

Train & Rail Components

General UIC standard low-friction composite brake block complies strictly with UIC Leaflet 541-4 (6th Edition, 2020) issued by International Union of Railways, belonging to the full range of LL low-friction drop-in replacement composite brake blocks, covering all certified sub-grades Notation #1 and Notation #2. It is compatible with both 2×Bg single-side single block and 2×Bgu double-side dual block brake configurations, suitable for cross-border European freight wagons with maximum operating speed ≤120km/h. It can replace traditional P10 cast iron brake blocks 1:1 without modifying original brake rigging or brake cylinders. The product is integrally hot-pressed with asbestos-free organic friction compound and stamped steel back, featuring stable dynamic friction coefficient ranging from 0.13 to 0.17, with friction fluctuation controlled within ±15% under dry, wet, extreme temperature and long downhill braking conditions. It has passed full UIC certification including dynamometer test, line cold resistance, thermal fading and track circuit compatibility tests. It delivers core advantages of low wheel tread abrasion, obvious braking noise reduction, eco-friendly non-toxic flue gas and zero interference with track signal circuits, acting as the universal retrofit brake block for noise reduction of existing European freight wagons.

Product Description

1. Applicable Standard & Product Classification Positioning

This product is the general LL low-friction composite brake block under UIC system, designed and manufactured in accordance with core documents: UIC Leaflet 541-4 (6th Edition, 2020) General Conditions for Certification and Use of Composite Brake Blocks, technical resolution B126 RP N11 and Usage Guidelines for LL Composite Brake Blocks (10th Edition). It is listed in EU TSI railway interoperability certification and eligible for cross-border operation across all European railway networksEuropean U.... The LL low-friction brake block series includes two certified sub-grades covering all mainstream freight bogies:

1. Notation #1 (Standard 1): Restricted to 2×Bg single-side single block brake structure, max axle load 22.5t, for light short-distance freight wagons;

2. Notation #2 (Standard 2): Compatible with both 2×Bg and 2×Bgu dual brake structures, max axle load upgraded to 25t, for medium-heavy haul cross-border wagons with double-side brake; Unified core product logic: Replicate the friction curve of P10 cast iron brake blocks to realize noise reduction retrofitting without brake system modification, different from K high-friction blocks which require fully redesigned brake rigging.

2. Structural & Material Composition

(1) Friction Contact Surface

Asbestos-free modified phenolic resin organic composite matrix, reinforced with aramid fiber and mineral fiber, mixed with graphite solid lubricant and antimony sulfide friction modifiers. Free of asbestos, lead, cadmium and other restricted heavy metals, no toxic flue gas or carbonization peeling under long-term high-temperature braking, compliant with EU REACH environmental regulations. Dynamic friction coefficient stably maintained at 0.13~0.17, matching the braking output of cast iron blocks. Curved surface precisely fits the tread radian of standard 730/760/840mm wheels to achieve full uniform contact during braking, drastically reducing wheel spalling, scuffing and tread damage. Uniform internal micropores absorb braking impact and eliminate high-frequency squeal during low-speed station approaching and rainy operation. All edges are passivated and thickened to prevent chipping and cracking during transportation and long-term heavy-duty service.

(2) Steel Back Base

Steel plate thickness varies by grade: Notation #1 adopts 4~5mm Q235 cold-rolled steel plate, while Notation #2 upgrades to 5~6mm thickened plate for stronger anti-bending and anti-impact capacity. Multiple trapezoidal anchor grooves are stamped on the inner side of steel back; friction compound deeply embeds into grooves during hot molding to reach UIC-standard bonding strength, preventing delamination and chipping under long-term cold & hot cyclic braking. Universal integrated buckle at the bottom fits both 2×Bg and 2×Bgu brake shoe holders for easy maintenance replacement. The steel back is equipped with a wear warning boss: continuous abnormal metal friction noise occurs when the friction layer wears down to the safety limit of 12mm to remind mandatory replacement.

3. Mandatory General UIC Performance Requirements

1. Friction Stability: Friction coefficient fluctuation ≤±15% under normal temperature, rain immersion, long downhill continuous braking and -40℃ extreme cold environment, without obvious cold or thermal fading; heavy-duty grade additionally passes 60-minute drag durability special test;

2. Thermal Resistance: Max continuous operating temperature 320℃ for #1 grade, 330℃ for heavy-duty #2 grade; instantaneous peak temperature 420~430℃ under wheel lock emergency braking, no bubbling, cracking or carbonization failure;

3. Wheel Protection: Wheel tread wear reduced by over 50% compared with traditional P10 cast iron blocks, wheel-rail equivalent conicity strictly controlled to avoid vehicle running instability;

4. Track Circuit Compatibility: Low-conductivity non-metallic formula generates no metal debris to interfere with railway signal transmission, passing full UIC circuit compatibility inspection;

5. Noise Reduction & Eco-Friendliness: Braking noise decreased by 10~18dB(A) versus cast iron blocks, complying with European freight wagon noise control regulations; biodegradable braking dust with no pollution in underground tunnels and long downhill lines;

6. Mechanical Safety Performance: Impact strength ≥1.8kJ/m², normal temperature compressive strength ≥25MPa, no large-area shedding during emergency braking or wheel-rail slipping.

4. Application Scope, Maintenance & Storage Rules

1. Applicable Rolling Stock: European standard open wagons, covered wagons, container freight wagons and cross-border transport vehicles, covering all 2×Bg single-side and 2×Bgu double-side brake bogies;

2. Matching Wheel Diameters: Standard steel tread wheels of 730mm, 760mm, 840mm;

3. Replacement Standard: Full brake block replacement mandatory when residual friction thickness ≤12mm; grinding, splicing and secondary reuse are prohibited;

4. Running-in Rule: Stable low-speed operation within the first 500km after installation, avoid frequent emergency braking to realize uniform fitting of friction surface; full-load long downhill braking forbidden during running-in period for heavy-duty wagons;

5. Inspection Cycle: Wheel equivalent conicity inspection every 25,000km for light-duty #1 vehicles; first inspection at 100,000km for new/reprofiled wheels of heavy-duty #2 vehicles, routine inspection every 50,000km; simultaneously check friction layer cracking, uneven wear and chipping defects;

6. Storage Condition: Store in dry and ventilated warehouse, avoid sunlight exposure and rain soaking, stacking height ≤10 layers, shelf life 18 months.

5. Core Differences Between LL Low-Friction & K High-Friction Brake Blocks

1. Friction Coefficient: LL block μ≈0.15 (low friction, drop-in retrofit for existing wagons); K block μ≈0.25 (high friction, matched for new wagons, requires brake rigging modification);

2. Installation Adaptation: LL blocks need no modification to original brake system; K blocks must be matched with brand-new brake levers and brake cylinders;

3. Application Scenario: LL for noise reduction retrofitting of existing freight wagons; K for newly manufactured freight and passenger rolling stock;

4. Wheel Wear Control: LL blocks require regular wheel equivalent conicity inspection; K blocks cause less wheel profile abrasion with longer inspection intervals.
